Static IP Addresses

Overview and general information

What is an Internet Protocol (IP) address?
Computers use IP addresses to locate and talk to each other on the Internet, much the same way people use phone numbers to call someone, street addresses for sending mail, and e-mail addresses to send electronic messages to a specific person. There are two kinds of IP addresses: static and dynamic.

Why would I need a static IP address?
You may want to consider a static IP address if you:

  • Host your Web site on a computer at your home or office.
  • Remotely access your computers over the Internet (e.g., telnet or FTP).
  • Are required to have a static IP address for access to a Virtual Private Network (VPN). Learn more about VPNs

Do I need a static IP address to have my own web site?
Not necessarily. Qwest.net® and Qwestoffice.net customers can have a web page stored on Qwest.net servers. Your private domain name can be mapped to the Qwest® stored web page. However, if you store and run your web site using your computer as a server, you will need static IP addresses.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of having only a single static IP address?
Advantages:
A single static IP address uses Network Address Translation (NAT), and is available for customers with Qwest® High-Speed Internet® and IDSL service. It is used for:

  • Operating a Web server
  • Operating a game server
  • Running a corporate Local Area Network (LAN)

Disadvantages:
Single static IP's do not provide the ability to assign a gateway address or assign a public IP address to devices on your internal network.

  • If you lease a single static IP address, it ONLY provides the ability to keep the same public IP assigned to the WAN side of your broadband modem.
  • If you need to assign a public IP address to devices behind your broadband modem, you will need to purchase a block of IP addresses.

Why would I need multiple static IP addresses (referred to as a "block")?
If you need the ability to assign a gateway address or assign a public IP address to devices on the internal network, you will need a block of static IP addresses.

  • If a single static IP address is being leased, it only provides the ability to keep the same public IP address assigned to the WAN side of the modem and nothing more.
  • If public IP addresses need to be assigned to devices behind the broadband modem, you need to lease a block of IP addresses.

What is ARIN?
ARIN (American Registry for Internet Numbers) is a nonprofit corporation that manages the distribution of IP addresses for most of North America. (For additional information see www.arin.net)

Why do I have to register my Static IP's?
Static IP addresses require registration for several reasons. Two of the most important reasons are 1) to avoid duplicate distribution, and 2) to ensure that traffic intended for a static IP reaches the correct destination.

Who has access to these numbers and how will they be used?
Static IP addresses, like phone numbers and physical addresses are largely common knowledge. Static IP addresses are used to ensure that data intended for a specific machine can consistently reach that machine, which generally is not possible with dynamic IPs as they can change over time.

How many static IP addresses can I lease per high-speed Internet telephone line?
You can lease a single static IP address from Qwest or a block of several contiguous IP addresses. Each high-speed Internet telephone line can only have one block leased to it, however there are several choices of block sizes available.

# of IP Addresses Assignable
N/A 1*
8 5
16 13
32 29
64 61

What happens to my IP addresses if I upgrade or downgrade block size?
If you want to increase or decrease your static IP block size, you will be assigned new IP addresses (you can't keep any existing IP addresses). You will then need to make the necessary configuration changes in your equipment to accommodate the new IP address assignments.

What is the difference between how many static IP addresses I lease and how many can be assigned to individual computers on the network?
When you lease a block of IP addresses, three addresses are reserved for network functions. The others are user-assignable to individual computers or servers.

Are static IP addresses available for lease to all Qwest customers?
Static IP addresses are currently available for lease to MSN® Premium, Windows Live™, Qwest.net and Qwestoffice.net customers, located in AZ, CO, ID, IA, MN, MT, NE, NM, ND, OR, SD, UT, WA, WY, and using the following Qwest services:

  • Qwest High-Speed Internet (Broadband, DSL)
  • IDSL
  • ISDN (single IP addresses are not compatible with ISDN, only static IP blocks can be leased with ISDN)

Availability & Ordering

Can I lease static IP addresses if I have dial-up Internet service?

  • Then, follow the instructions on the screen.
  • You may lease a single static IP address, or a block of multiple static IP addresses.
  • You may configure and start using your static IP address within one hour of ordering it from Qwest. See set up instructions.

For Qwest with Windows Live or MSN Premium customers, order here.

  • You will need either:
    • Qwest Home Billing Telephone Number and 3-digit Customer Code
    • Qwest MyAccount Username and Password, or
    • your Windows Live ID (ex: user@q.com, user@msn.com or user@hotmail.com) and password to sign in to the ordering tool. If you do not know any of these, please contact Qwest Technical Support.

How much do static IP addresses cost and how many addresses do I get?

  • You may lease up to 64 Static IP addresses per high-speed Internet telephone line.
  • When you lease a block of IP addresses, three addresses are reserved for network functions. The remaining IP addresses are available for you to assign to individual computers as outlined in the table below:
    # of IP Addresses Assignable Monthly Rate One Time Charge
    N/A 1* $5.95 $25.00
    8 5 $14.95 $50.00
    16 13 $29.95 $75.00
    32 29 $59.95 $150.00
    64 61 $119.95 $250.00

What are the basic terms of the IP address lease?

  • The lease on static IP addresses continues until you either choose to delete them from your account, or until you cancel your Qwest High-Speed Internet service.
  • Only one domain name can be assigned to a specific IP address. For example, ftp.mycompany.com and www.mycompany.com are considered one domain name. This is only applicable to qwestoffice.net customers.
  • However, www.yourcompany.com and www.mycompany.com are considered two separate domain names and could not both be assigned to the same static IP address. This is only applicable to qwestoffice.net customers.

If I move my home or office, may I continue to use the same static IP addresses I already leased?
You might be able to keep the same static IP addresses. When you call Qwest to move your service from one location to another, inform the Qwest representative that you have static IP addresses and would like to have them at the new location. There are two factors in your service location change that could prevent this:

  • The distance between your old and new locations may necessitate new static IP addresses with your service in the new location
  • If your high-speed Internet service type changes (e.g., broadband service changes to ISDN), it may not be possible to have static IP addresses, or new static IP addresses may be required.

Troubleshooting

Why can't I access the Internet after setting up my static IP addresses?
Incorrect gateway address information will prevent you from establishing an Internet connection, when using static IP addresses.

  • If the gateway address is entered incorrectly, no error message will appear; you simply won't be able to connect to the Internet. Try reentering the gateway address and attempting to connect to the Internet again.
